I'll be there for at least a little while Saturday. First chance to actually do some work on the house, but I've convinced the lady I've been good all year and deserve to see some racing before I have to get back to the honeydo list.

I worte this on our Facebook but thought it could help here for anyone that's never been.
I’m writing this in hopes that some people who have never been to a WERA event, that may be on the fence about going will having learned more about what’s going on and what you can do there will pack up their bikes or cars and head over for a day or the weekend!
WERA:
WERA is the race organization just below the professional level in the US. It’s filled with dreamers, weekend warriors, vintage racers, people tired of getting tickets on the street but more importantly the “up and comers” of the next generation of professional riders. Take for example Garrett Gerloff, Jake Lewis and Jake Morman. These “kids” are barely old enough to drive but have already traveled the US and in some cases the world racing and winning! These are names you’ll read again in magazines or when you see them on Speed channel you’ll be able to say “I saw them when…”
Road Atlanta:
Road Atlanta is a 12 turn, 2.5 mile road course with some best known turns in the community: The Esses are a snaking down hill section, 10 a and b is a complete bus stop turn after a top speed back straight, Turn 1 is a fast sweeping uphill that has decided many a race, and the newly redesigned Turn 12 which is a 4-story drop back on to the front straight.
The GNF:
The Grand National Final is the last race of the year for WERA. A lot of different classes are run and a lot of different championships are decided this weekend. There are two types of WERA racers novice (yellow number plates) and experts (white number plates) and their motorcycles basically fall into two classes: those based upon the displacement / type of the engine and those based upon similar lap times. The same bike can run multiple classes over a weekend. For example an SV650 will be in the “Light weight twins” class of course but it will also run with a lot of different types of bikes in the “Formula 2” class because they all turn about the same time around the track. There’s also some classes not based on the motorcycle at all: women’s only classes, forty-year-old and over classes! Don’t let any of this confuse you though, because I’ll explain later the best way to enjoy the weekend without having to learn the classes (or the rules for that matter).
Thursday is Vintage Series Final and a practice day for the rest of the competitors. Friday a 4-hour long endurance race is run after lunch. Endurance racing is an awesome sight! Bikes of all different classes start at the same time. You’ll see GSX-R 1000s passing SV-650s (hopefully). Bikes come in about every hour for pit-stops consisting of rider changes, fuel, and sometimes tire swaps. Some of the big teams can change both tires and put in a full tank of fuel in less than 30 seconds! At the end of the 4-hours a checkered flag is thrown and trophies are awarded for overall finishes and finishes within the classes.
Friday afternoon and all day Saturday the Sportsmen Series Sprint races (8 laps) are also run. Sportsmen races are based upon regions in the U.S. (e.g. Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Central). All the regional races have already been run and the regional winners have been decided based upon points given for finishes at each race. These Sportsmen series races decide who is the best of those winners! It’s great sprint racing because everyone’s trying so hard to either defend their record or to try and take someone’s away! For example someone may have won five regional championships by doing well in the points chase all year but at the GNF get beat by someone who finished 3rd in only one region! The first racer is still the champion in those regions but the second racer is now the Sportsmen Series National Champion for that class!
Sunday is the final round of the National Challenge Series. This series has similar classes as the sprints but these are the guys and gals going places! A lot of these classes have championships coming to this last race! Remember the guys I told you about earlier? Their racing has drawn such attention that their races
How to watch the race:
Car or bike it doesn’t matter. Load it up! Bring chairs, drinks, snacks (there are food vendors there too!), sunscreen, blanket, maybe an umbrella or EZ-up for shade, binoculars and whatever else you need. At the gate you’ll be asked to sign a waiver. Then what you’ll end up doing is finding a turn to make a “base camp”. There will be plenty of open areas. It’s a 2.5 mile loop! Shady areas under trees near the Esses, open grassy areas overlooking the entire back area, a stadium type area at 10 a and b are all places you can adventure too from your base camp. Once you get that set up just start exploring. Download a track map from the Road Atlanta site and a schedule from WERA, tune your radio to the announcer and drive around watching all the turns.
At some point make it down to the pits. Here you’ll be able to meet the racers, watch from the pitwall (no open toe shoes on pit-lane) and find someone to root for! That’s why you don’t have to really know the rules. Find a friend, or meet a new one, or find someone with a bike like yours. Introduce yourself and get to know them a bit. Then find out their number and what races they’re in and be sure to be in your favorite turn to cheer them on!
Practice starts at 8:00 am every morning and races right after lunch and there’s a mandatory quiet time from 10:00 to Noon on Sunday. Lunch is a great time to meet the racers in the paddock. Polite word of caution though: this is also the only time some have to work on their bike between practice and their race. So if you someone seems in a bit of a hurry or gruff they’re probably just chasing down a part or in a hurry to get their new tires back on their bike.
Pricing:
$35 for Friday – Sunday
$30 for just Saturday and Sunday
$20 for Sunday only
Hope to see some more of y'all out there and if you do come out find us in the pits,
Huey, Anne and everyone at MarMo

Good going Nikk. 3 wins on the day !!
Thanks guys!!! Finished the year like I started it by sweeping the weekend!!! 5 race wins and 4 National Championships!!! Stoker gave me a strong run for the money in the first 3 races of the weekend with one being 0.014 apart!!! He broke his tranny so the rest were hard but not quite the same battle.... I was in 2nd overall behind Opie in the race on Sunday. Didn't know that so when my hands started hurting and I couldn't hold onto the bars, I let the 2 experts get back by and held on to my class lead to finish 4th overall but 1st in my class...
Travis...you gotta take me to the dragstip and teach me those monster launches of yours!!!

Hey Ramm thanks for posting that picture I had heard a cameraman had caught a pretty good shot of that incident, me and the other turn 1 runner had come back their to help pic up the parts and help get the track ready to go green , I never saw the incident just the aftermath witch was pretty amazing in and of it self.

Outstanding, it's really amazing how fast you've progressed in the sport. How long have you been racing now, less than a year?

196-197hp with the MR12... it was good and bad really...I went about as fast on pump gas cause the excessive wheelies just slowed me down by a second or two!!! I literally went to the back straight to talk to the couple that were standing in the Jeep in red sweatshirts off to the right cause I came by them many times toting the front wheel clear down the back straight shifting gears while still leaned over some!!!! and I can't ride a wheelie on purpose to save my life!!! Came down the front straight with the front in the air to the point I had to set it down in order to downshift, brake and turn in for T1.... wore my hands out...
And you tell me a night and we'll hit Commerce!!! It should be a hoot! think you get more passes on Tuesday vs. Friday though...

Outstanding, it's really amazing how fast you've progressed in the sport. How long have you been racing now, less than a year?
My first race was June 2009... ran a 600 then and in 2010... Too big for it so went to a 1000 for 2011 and had much better results!!! I was usually 4th-8th on the 600...
First time ever being on a track was August 2008...before that I rode a little bit on the street but never any twisties cause i swore off going fast in turns after I broke my neck in a motorcycle wreck in 1995...

+2 It was pretty awesome too see you running second over all in that race Nikk giving the experts hell that was some nice ridding man ! For those that didn't get to see the race he wasn't in second overall because their was no one their he had 2 other experts (forgot their numbers) behind him riding the wheels off their bikes trying to catch him was very impressive!
Nikk= cherrypicker.........that is all. :lol:

Yeah, I had no idea i was in 2nd... my hands got to the point that I could barely hold on to the bars, so to be safe i decided to back off and not try and hold them off and possibly hurt someone or myself... but I would have beat them had that not been the case!!! or had I known I was in 2nd overall!!!! (half a lap from Opie of course though...) Note I started 11 rows behind them!!!

Just couldn't resist could ya... I was going to make the "Todd" disclaimer in my prior post but I was hoping you would take the high road.... now we know... :D always raining on my parade... fast on your way to grumpy old man status!! seriously though, running my ass off and I barely beat Stoker on Saturday so that to me is far from cherry picking... Everyone seemed to enjoy the battles. Even if it was me against Experts... (they kept getting in my way!!!)

Oh and speaking of Impressive did anyone else catch that we had a female corner worker (Dawn) who was not only flagging in turn 1 but also was riding (we had someone cover her station for her races) and manage to pick up 2 trophies? Something to be said for throwing flags half the day and riding well for the other half!!

It was also a difference when the only experts i was beating was in the old fart class. I never ran up front with the front running experts in any other class other than that, unlike you. :D
Read your last sentence, you said it yourself. Dude, there werent any novices anywhere close to you in some of those races this weekend. But hey! I'll give credit where credit is due, you looked great out there, and i cant even begin to run your times, so glad you got all those novice wins and championships.

Pissed? did you miss my :D ??? My last sentence was helping you by making fun of myself... I realize you're busting my balls.... the jokes just get stale after you've said it so many times... Positive thoughts please!!!
But had you been there on Saturday you would have seen a much different scenario as the gap was 0.014 between me and 2nd place... and I was running as hard as I could!!! Turned my fastest lap ever by a second!!! He passed me on the inside into T12 for the checkered but ended up running wide so it was a drag race to the line with me trying to throttle up while keeping the front end down...(not easy) Lucky for me, he broke a tranny in the next race (which I won by only a second) and sat out Sunday.
Thanks for the props and it was good seeing you at the track. From you instructing me at Bargy and me wrecking in front of ya to this, wow what a change! Come on out, I'll teach ya a thing or two...:Poke:
Now if you read this and still think I'm pissed or something negative... stand on your head and reread please....

"Huh uh huh.... nice butt.. Muh hah ha ha..."
I beat her a year ago on an SV in a mock race. I almost lost THAT day. I swore I'd never race her again.
I've held true to my promise as, trust me, I've never raced her again! Hahaha
She got a crap start. It's one thing I can do pretty good. She was really out of rhythm. I allllllmost passed her out of 5. But by the time we got to 7 she'd collected herself and I never saw her again.
I'ma need a bigger bike! Hahahaha
