i am a cpa, but have never paid someone else to do my taxes. what is the going rate these days?

seems to me i spend a majority of the time collecting the information needed to complete the forms -- the prep firm is not going to do that for me.

I pay 325. The rate increased after we had a child in 2012. Until that point, I always did my own on TurboTax, but it got to be where I didn't want to screw it up either way, so we were willing to pay someone who knows how to correctly input the info.

The document gathering sucks. Luckily my wife likes to organize all of that. The CPA sends over a folder every January with everything listed he would need.

I want to say I paid $45 for TT at Costco.

Even if you did trades the up charge is not worth it unless you have rentals or own a business etc.

I'm on the hook for $3k to Obama, claiming zero and doing Schedule A...not real happy...

Vanguard gives me a discount on TT, but we used a CPA last year. Probably will again this year.

Is reporting the sale of your primary residence complicated? We didn't make enough profit to owe any tax, but I'm sure I need to document the cost basis. We lived there 18 years. So I have no idea how to figure it.

Late, but we pay a CPA less than 200. That includes W-2 and 1099 filing.
